My 18 month old never goes to bed before 8pm.
Is that too late?
Everyone at groups mentioning their toddlers go to sleep at 630pm?!
What am I doing wrong!

Mine is 22 months and usually asleep around 7.30/8pm. It's not too late unless you think it is. Depends on your routine and what works for you.

Having said that mine had a late nap today and is still wide awake at the minute

I don’t think you are doing anything wrong. Weve always had an 8-8:30pm bedtime. Works fine for us. DS (2.4) sleeps until 7-7:30am which I love - I wonder what time the toddlers who go to bed at 6:30pm are waking at in the morning?

TriceratopsRocks · 27/08/2022 20:43

You are doing nothing wrong, if it works for you. Mine never went to bed before 8pm either. DM once suggested we put them to bed earlier, like others. I asked her how we might manage that when we didn't all get in from work until after 6pm. Then we needed to cook, eat, let tea go down. Bath/wash, story, bed. 8-8.30pm worked absolutely fine. And it meant they tended not to wake up ridiculously early in the morning too!

Do what works for your family. When my DS was 2, he often didn’t go to sleep until 8:30. When he dropped his naps at 2.5, bedtime was lots earlier. Now he’s 4.5, he is usually asleep by 7:30 but we’re away with family so tonight it will be 9pm. I say all of this because there aren’t any rules set in stone. If you are happy and your child is happy then do what suits your family. There is no scientific evidence that suggests bedtime must be at 7pm. Children around the world mostly have much later bedtimes I think.

SunshineClouds1 · 27/08/2022 20:45

Mine did at that age.
Earlier once he dropped his nap.

There's no right or wrong, as long as your all getting sleep and are happy who cares.

This is my son currently! He wakes up anytime between 6/7

PutOnAHappyFace · 27/08/2022 20:47

My 14month old goes to bed between 7-8 depending on naps. My other DDs at that age went at 6pm on the dot. And I don't think it makes a difference just obviously less adult time in the evening.

SillyBub · 27/08/2022 20:51

My 2 DC (now 14 & 12) have never gone to bed before 8pm. They've always slept in until past 8am if they aren't/weren't woken for nursery/school. I've never had to face 5/6am wake-ups and count myself very lucky. It wasn't broke so we never fixed it.

The average amount of overnight sleep for an 18 month old is 10-11h. I therefore think you are quite lucky getting to 6 or 7am with a 6:30pm bedtime. It could feasibly be 4:30-5:30am.

He's 3 now and knackered off nursery haha

ChittyBang1987 · 27/08/2022 21:59

18 month old here. My lo goes to bed between 745pm and 8pm. Unless it's been a nursery day. Less sleep at nursery equals grumpy toddler. So we pop her to bed early. Recently started sleeping in till 8am at times now, so if continues will have a rethink. Used to be 630am to 7am with 8pm bed.

I don't get home till 730pm so I need that half hour to see her.

If we put my lo to bed at 630pm she be up at 5am latest.

KangarooKenny · 27/08/2022 22:00

Mine never went to bed before 8pm, no matter how many times I tried.

MissPankhurst · 27/08/2022 22:04

How much sleep is he getting in total? If it is around 10 hours and the routine works for you, I wouldn't worry.

Abouttimemum · 27/08/2022 22:09

Whatever works for you I’d say.
DS has always had to be up for nursery for 6.30 so he was usually in bed before 7. He’s still asleep for 7.15 usually at age 3. Works for us because we go to bed quite early so it means we’ve got plenty of time together in the evening still!

FHmama · 27/08/2022 22:24

Definitely not too late at all - as long as he's getting enough sleep and is well rested! My 2 year old does 6:30/7pm - 6am but most parents I know have a 7:30/8 bedtime and later wake up times in the morning.

allboysherebutme · 27/08/2022 22:31

That's fine, I don't know why people want their children in bed so early at 6:30.
Do what is best for you. X

Polimolly · 27/08/2022 22:33

I used to come back from work at 6:30, so bed time was always between 8 and 8:30.

It worked for us

Discovereads · 27/08/2022 22:33

We always did 8pm from infancy. Planning ahead to when would be getting at home at 6pm after picking them up from nursery. Need a minimum 2hrs for dinner, play, bath and bed routine.

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. Probably alot right.
