When to move toddler into toddler bed?

DS is 3 in November. I've always had it in my head that you move them out around that age or when they can climb out themselves which he can't - he doesn't even try. He's really good with sleep and naps and we have no need to move him out currently.

The thing I'm wondering about is I'm due to have child no.2 in march next year and he'll be getting on for age 4 by the time we do move him if we don't do it before? Obvs don't want to do the transition with a new baby about for our own stress levels and his!

Should I just keep him in the cotbed til we're ready as we have no problems with it or try moving him out before baby? Guess I'm just wondering if it'll be odd to have him in a cotbed still over the age of 3 or if it's still pretty normal 😅 thanks!

Personally I would do it soon, there is some back and fourth with putting them back into bed in the beginning. We did it around 2.5 and he got his big bed just before 3 and his brother arrived.
We found a gro clock helped as he stays in bed unless he needs the loo as long as the stars are up.

I would do it soon, I had to move my son out of his cot at 2.5 because I was simply too pregnant to lift him over the top! I felt it helped that the cot was then clearly for the baby (although much further down the line) and that his bed hadn't been taken away from him when the baby arrived.

I have just moved my little girl into her 'big girl bed' and she's 3 in September. She was fine with it and will stay in her bed without getting up in the night.

I'd just do it and make a big deal of having a 1st bed. Put some pillows on the floor in case he falls out in the night. After a while he'll get use to it.

We turned the cotbed into a toddler bed when he turned 2.5.

Then about 2 weeks ago moved him into a single bed (he's 3.5 now). Loves his big boy bed and makes it easier when we go away as don't need to worry about a carry cot etc,
He just sleeps in a normal single next to his big sis.

Haven't quite mastered him not rolling around so he has a safety guard on!

We waited till each DC could climb out of the cotbed - for DD this was about 3, for DS it was 3.5. DD actually didn't get out of her new toddler bed at the start - she thought she wasn't allowed! But DS has been a bit more of a challenge, but it's fine now. Personally I'd wait for a few months & maybe do it at Christmas? That would give you all a few months to get used to it before the new baby comes along.

Moving my little one into a single bed within the next few months. She is 23 months at the moment.

Leave it as long as possible, and hate their door when you do if you haven't already. Mine didn't move until they were just over three.

Thanks all for the advice! Deffo given me some things to think about. Going to discuss with OH some more and decide what's best to go with :)

We moved our DS when he was a couple of months over 2. As another PP said we made a big deal over him getting his big boy bed, and got duvet covers with characters he really likes so was pretty happy with it :) he rolled out in his sleep a few times but after maybe 2 weeks he didn't again!
