Early Waking

More questions about sleep!!!

LO 9m has been waking at 5am for past few weeks. Used to go to 6am ish with a 7pm bedtime. I’m wondering if he is getting too much day sleep for age and that is shortening his night sleep? He used to sleep 2x 1hr 20 mins, so 2hr 40 total, but now he has started having 2 hours for his afternoon nap, so schedule looks like this:

9-10.20am - NAP (1hr 20)
1.45-3.45pm - NAP (2hr)

I have moved bed to 7.30pm but this has made no difference so far, but perhaps haven’t been doing it for long enough to see an effect. He’s having less than 10 hours night sleep when he used to do 11.

Should I shorten his naps in the day?

Any changes to bedtime you make can take up to 3 weeks to see any changes. Sleep needs change all the time, we'll that's what I found with my lo. She's only ever done 10 to 11 at night. So if I put her to bed at 7pm I be getting up at 5am 😴

Its a hard one as if you start chopping and changing the sleep in day it could make it worse. Some people would do 1 hour 9am till 10am then 1pm ish till 3pm ish. Giving you 7pm sleep. Though probably early rise again. I found especially at that age if I wake her up i get a grumpy LG for rest of day and gets overtired.

Personally I would stick with it for a few weeks with later bedtime. Just checking that, lo not hungry? All blacked out? Birds not waking lo up? Not cold? The usual.
