How to get baby to sleep in cot again?

Without going on and on.. we are 7 weeks into the 4 month sleep regression and baby is nearly 6 months now. It got so bad he used to scream in his cot and was taking us 4 hours to get him to bed at night. He was waking half hourly; We resorted to co sleeping. But now, he won't sleep unless I'm next to him. He's ready for bed about 730 after a bath and story and feed to sleep and I go to leave the room and he's awake (and cries, no, he screams! ). So I either have to stay with him all evening OR sometimes I just bring him downstairs so I can actually eat my dinner in peace.
I'd love to be able to have some evening and him to be able to get some good sleep in. He never does a long stretch any more. I think the longest is 2 hours in the middle of the night?
I am thinking of transitioning him into his own room and cot?
Thoughts? Advice?
He is EBF for reference. Seems like all breast fed babies are sleep stealers! X
