18 month old sleep dreadful - any pointers?

My 18 month old sleeps terribly and this isn’t a new situation so I can’t blame it on a sleep regression or similar. I really need to sort it as it is having a really negative affect on me and has for some time, to be honest.

He wakes every three and a half hours, so usually the first wake up is between 10 and 11. That one isn’t too bad - he has milk then goes back to sleep. The second one is usually between midnight and 2 and for that one it’s very difficult to get him back down and he often cries hysterically when you put him back in his cot. I’ve sometimes been so tired I just take him to bed with me but then I sleep poorly. And then he is up for the day just before 6.

I did try Ferber and it didn’t work … he got really upset and wound up and distressed at me being there but not holding him. Just kept standing up with his arms out sobbing which was horrible.

I am considering just doing CIO but not sure if anyones going to be able to stick to it.

What’s your schedule? Up for the day at 6am, but when is his nap and bedtime? What do his days look like - is he getting lots of mental and physical stimulation? How are you getting him to sleep in the first place? The milk overnight is it a breastfeed or a bottle of milk?
