safety - pillows and cot-bumpers?

DS is nearly 11m, so I guess I should know this, but when can you start using pillows for LOs and are cot-bumpers still a big no-no?

we're trying to cosy up his cot in the hope he'll want to spend more time there, any other suggestions welcome!

You can use a pillow from 12m I believe and my kids had cot bumpers from the start till they started pulling them off.
I never had a problem with them using them as a step out, as they are supposed to.
