Baby whisperer pick up put down pu/pd

Does anyone have any experience of this?
LO is just turned 6 months, always been a good sleeper but over the last month has stopped being able to put himself to sleep after his 2 night feeds. We didn't want to rock him so was shushing with hand on chest and this worked for a while but no longer working.
I used the pu/pd for his naps as I used to rock him but it was breaking my back Grin he took to it really well for naps only 40 minutes and quickly got better each day.
We have been using pu/pd for the last 3 nights and it's just not working- after the 5am feed he was still wailing after 2 and half hours. Eventually he fully woke up and then after playing in his cot he went back to sleep around 8.30am (I didn't know if I should have just started the day but thought if I don't get him back to sleep I've put him through torture for the last 2 hours)?!
I'm dreading tonight 😢

What tome does lo go to bed? And how many naps in day?

Kiza · 04/04/2022 11:41

Goes to bed around 8-8.30pm, has had a solid bedtime for a few months now and no problem taking himself off to sleep.
Has 3-4 naps a day of 45 mins each and we follow the EASY approach of baby whisperer.
He had always been able to take himself back off to sleep after his 2 night feeds but the last week he hasn't been able to, he starts off trying and after 20 mins of getting sleepy he starts to cry.
We don't want to revert back to rocking to sleep (which we obviously did when he was younger) so have tried the Pu/Pd method. It worked brilliantly for day naps but at night it's like each time we pick him up he starts to fall asleep on our shoulder immediately or once he stops crying and the moment we attempt to put him down he starts wailing. It took 2 and half hours and he then seemed to fully wake himself from all the crying and about 200 pick ups!
He then went to sleep with the hand on chest and shushing but oh man those 2 hours were torture with so many tears from him and loud crying- I felt so cruel as this is supposed to be a gentle approach but it doesn't feel like it.

When my lo did waking at 5am, I did the whole pushing the first nap until as close to 9am as possible, I would say don't let lo sleep longer than an hour at this time, but that doesn't seem a problem with you. I would even say perhaps lo is overtired....

Have you tried extending the naps?
Think at 6 months I was doing approx
9 till 10 nap
1230 to 1 nap until 2 to 230pm
430pm 445pm until 515pm ish.
8pm asleep.
5am wake and even if I had to contact sleep until 7am.

I think 5am wakeups are quite common and we found fewer and far between when they get to 2 naps.

I'm not sure this helps xx

At the moment he needs the 5am feed (slightly under weight) so it's not him waking for thhim feed that's the problem it's him losing the ability to put himself back to sleep. He's obviously tired and wants to but just struggles and then cries because he's tired but can't get back to sleep.
Up until a week ago he could easily do it but now he starts to drift off but 15-20 mins later he starts to cry.

To me, it sounds like lo is overtired then. My lo is the same in occasions wakes at 530am and won't go back to sleep and she self soothes but clearly so tired. That day and if needed few days after I work on naps and letting her sleep as long as she likes, while shortening, wake windows.

Perhaps to have a look at your nap routine?

At that age, I think they think 5am is morning. So no method would really work.
