DS is coming up 14m. Has been napping for 45-60 mins twice a day (10am and 2.30pm) for aggges now. But he’s now not tired at 10am - I feed him to sleep for his naps, he will doze on the boob but when I put him in his cot he wakes and screams (he has never self settled but normally I feed to sleep and pop him down asleep no problem).

It would seem he doesn’t really want that morning nap now - but it leaves me at a bit of a loss as to what to do. Shall I try and keep him awake til lunch? Problem is he NEVER naps longer than one hour - and one nap of an hour won’t be enough will it? He sleeps 12hours a night with some boob and resettles (we cosleep)

Feeling a bit lost as to what to do as we’ve had our two nap routine for ages now. Also unsure when to feed him his lunch if we drop to one nap.

He normally wakes about 7am and goes to bed at 7pm

Please help!

Give him a reasonable snack at half 10 ish, push nap a bit later then more food after.
Food is food whenever it's eaten.

@Harrysmummy246 thank you! So nap a bit later but if he only sleeps for one hour won't he be absolutely knackered by his 7 bedtime?

Hiya, at this age defo go for 1 nap - when mine dropped the morning nap they used to have an early lunch (11am!!) and then sleep 12 -2 ish (if they slept until 3 it was a bonus and I never let them sleep past 3! They’d sometimes be in bed fast asleep by 6 and then sleep until 7am. The theory is that by having 2 naps they get to a stage where they’re tired enough to go to sleep for the semiconductors nap but not tired enough to sleep for very long if that makes sense. If he can’t stay awake until 12 then go as late as you can (have a big snack half 10 ish and then lunch after a nap if that works) and keep pushing the nap back - it’ll naturally get later anyway. To start off with it will make for a long afternoon but they can do it - if needs be have tea at 4 and bath 5ish to stop them being grumpy!!

*second nap, not semiconductors nap! Not sure how that autocorrect happened!

Move to one nap. Try and stretch to 11-11:30 and slowly push back to lunchtime. Bring bedtime earlier to compensate for lack of an afternoon nap, you may well find sleep consolidates and you'll get a 2 hour nap after the first few weeks.

It sounds like he's trying to adjust to one nap. I'd try go for one nap around 11/11.30 and bring bedtime a bit earlier to compensate.

Harrysmummy246 · 15/03/2022 13:14

Play it by ear. You might have to have a short later one and then push bedtime back to adjust. You're clearly trying for first one too early.

When my three got to this stage they did seem to lengthen their nap time. I'd give lunch at 11:30 then pop them down for a nap and they'd sleep for 2-3 hours. The first week was always difficult with them adapting and staying awake longer. But for us an early lunch so they didn't wake because of hunger was best.

It's a really tough transition to make down to one nap! It took us a few weeks. Some days he would have one nap, sometimes two.
Before the transition we were doing a nap at 9am for 10-15mins then second nap 1-3pm.
The routine you're aiming for is nap 12-2pm, bed 7pm.
It takes a while to get to midday for the nap, you might be able to push him to 11.15 or 11.30am then do bed at 6.30pm.

I've always done lunch before the nap, we usually have it at about 12.15am before his midday nap.

Good luck x
