4 month old sleeping too much?!

Currently sat with my 4 month old baby asleep on me for the third time today. I'm worried he is napping too much as everything I've read says 3-4hrs of naps per day - he clocked up 3.5hrs in his first 2 naps!

He doesn't have a routine for sleep but on average:

Sleeps from 8.30/9pm until 4am (try to feed him at around midnight whilst half asleep). 4am feed and back to sleep til just after 6am when he wants to be up.

After about 90 minutes awake he gets grumpy and needs to sleep. His naps vary between 30 mins (rare) and 2.5 hours! This continues until he stays asleep from about 8.30pm - 9pm.

Am I doing something wrong here?!

If its working for you, go with it. As long as lo is healthy and happy. Feeding well, providing good nappies I wouldn't worry xx

Forgot to say some babies need more sleep then others.

Is he otherwise content? Feeding ok? If so then let him sleep. Enjoy it. He'll wake up more and more as he gets older.

Is he gaining weight? Is he alert and happy to kick his legs, wave his arms, have lots of energy and smiles while he is awake, or is he more chilled and quiet while awake/kind of snoozy?

Very happy and alert when awake! He's just learnt to roll and wants to be "stood up" all the time! Eating well, gaining weight (he's really long, 3-6 month sleepsuits are almost too short!)

His dad and I love our sleep, perhaps it's genetic? Grin

Then, if all is well. Enjoy it. My lo is really long too -2 to 3 year old vests already and only 11 months old 😆

Thank you! Wow, you might have a future basketball player there!

My daughter was like that, would sleep 10 hours at night and then a good 4-6 hours during the day.
She's 30 today and still loves her sleep, happily sleeps 10 hours but now during the day as she works nights as a nurse. I was told she obviously wasn't very bright as only thick children slept a lot. Angry I must make sure that the critically ill children she nurses know they have an unintelligent nurse caring for them.
I think that some children just like sleep.

😆 If she's sporty, she definitely doesn't get it from me!

That's good to know! And what a ridiculous comment, I've actually heard the opposite!

Have you got the huckleberry app? Sounds completely normal for his age. My little girl is similar and I think you’re supposed to count total hours of sleep in 24 hours not day and night sleep separate. He goes to bed slightly later and wakes early so he’s probably making up for it Smile
