4 month old only doing 30 min naps but sleeps through at night

We feel pretty lucky our baby sleeps from 7.30pm-6/7am consistently (at the moment) but during the day he has 3 naps that used to be 1-2 hours and are now like 30-45 mins each.

I guess this is due to sleep cycles, but he doesn’t seem to have this issue at night. Should I try to get him to nap longer in the day or just leave it? He’s getting about 13.5-14.5 hours sleep per day overall. Thanks!

How is baby himself during the day? If he seems okay off shorter naps, I’d leave it. I’m sure it goes by a total amount of sleep in 24 hours and it sounds like he’s getting that with sleeping through Smile

P.S. any tips? Grin also got a 4MO but she wakes at midnight and 4/5am for a bottle and a few random times throughout the night.

Yeah he seems ok, I guess we’ll just go with it until it stops working!

I’m really not sure how it’s happened and I think it’s just luck of the draw with babies tbh. But, because he had colic we were advised to start a bedtime routine at 6 weeks and gradually brought his bedtime to 7.30. We do bath, bottle, bed, dark room, lullaby music and change to pyjamas. In the beginning he would cry when we put him down but he was crying no matter what we did with the colic so I guess that made us feel strongly that sleep was for the best. We would comfort him and pick him up but after a few days he started to go down easily.

We were feeding twice a night, then it weve down to once, then he was regularly just having a feed at around 5am. And then at about 12 weeks he just started going until 7ish. We never did a dream feed as we tried once and it seemed to disrupt him.

He does wake up in the night sometimes but unless he’s crying we don’t do anything, as he’s just settling himself back to sleep.

A 4 month old needing a few feeds in the night does sound very normal though, I’m sure eventually your little one will start to go a bit longer.

I hope this helps?

Short naps are very typical at that age.
I would always try to do the midday nap in the pram and walk for an hour to get over the first sleep cycle.

@busyeatingbiscuits glad to hear it’s common. He actually doesn’t sleep well in the pram at all, not sure why but I can walk with it for half an hour and he’ll still have his eyes wide open!! Even if he does shut them he never seems to be in a proper sleep… weird x
