19m old won't settle back to sleep without milk

Hi all,

So this has been an ongoing issue for a while now

DS was an incredible sleeper at night time. From about 9/10 weeks old he would sleep through the night and by 4 months would happily do 7-7/8 without wake ups / a night feed

Since about 12/13 months that's changed. He wakes up nearly every night at either around 11pm or 4am (very odd) and he will not go back down again until he's had a bottle of milk and a bum change. He will literally scream and cry until he's had milk.

I'd also like to add that he wakes up in the morning CRYING every day. He doesn't wake up nicely like apparently other kids do 😂

We've tried

  • giving him water instead
  • reducing the amount of milk he has in the night bottle
  • giving him a bottle and a snack (banana) before bed to fill him up
  • CIO in 5 min intervals, settle and leave again
  • earlier and later bedtimes
  • giving him a pillow (he's still in a sleep bag)

He has 3 meals a day, and 2 snacks. Plus a morning bottle and an evening bottle which are both 9oz.

He goes to the toilet regularly so no constipation
He's not teething right now
He's in no way big for his age (in fact he's in 12/18m clothes still which he only recently went into)

In the mornings recently he's waking up so tired because he's not getting a proper nights sleep and he's an actual grump who doesn't want to do anything he's told 🤦🏽‍♀️

I'm not sure what else I can do to get him to drop this night feed when he certainly doesn't need it!

Any advice?!

Have you tried letting him sleep with a toddler quilt?
Around 15 months my son hated his sleep bag and felt restricted.
If milk is his comfort, he’s going to want that.

Does he have a favourite teddy? Let him sleep with that, just offer water.
Be matter of fact and calm if he wakes up. “Sleep time, lie down, night night”
is he scared of the dark maybe?

I don't know if it will work for you or if it was just a fluke with my DS. Once DS was one we stopped giving him milk in a bottle and offered it to him in a cup. He was furious for two nights but then starting sleeping through.

Try a duvet and pillow now. Xx

Sorry I've just seen these!

We did try him with a duvet but he didn't seem to like it so we swapped back to the sleeping bag which he does like! I'm trying the duvet again tonight to see if we can get him used to it

He does already have a pillow, he's had one for about 2 months now!

We also tried him with a cup instead of a bottle but he didn't want it because he knows he can't drink it as fast as he can with a bottle (his co-ordination with an open cup isn't the best still lol)

Still waking up most nights. Today was 2am

I can see why so many mums stay at home instead of going to work. Why be a zombie at work when you can at least try and nap when your kid does 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

Change his bum, give him milk and all go back to sleep. It won't last for ever, and he is still very small.
