When my baby goes into his own room should he have a cot or cot bed? What age can they stay in a cot up to? Tight on space, and want to get it right first time

My ds was in a city until 2½ years old. It wasn't a cotbed. He went into a single bed at that point

Cot*

My son was in his cot until nearly 4! It was a cot bed so took up the same amount of space either way. He was potty trained at 2.5 years but in pull ups at night until he was about 4.5 and he never tried to climb out his cot so we just left him in it! When we converted the cot to a bed we had zero issues. I'm glad I didn't rush it. Some friends who have moved to beds earlier (when their lo's were around 2) had a tough time with them repeatedly getting out of bed for waking early and no longer settling back to sleep (getting up instead) we didn't have any of that because he was older and could understand what was going on and what was expected of him. I personally wouldn't rush going to a bed, if they're happy in a cot I'd keep with it as long as you can!
