Getting 1 year old to self settle?

My LO has always been a good sleeper, apart from when ill. Moved to their own room at 6 months and we got them able to be put down in the cot awake and they would put themselves to sleep for naps and nighttime no problem.

Roll on to a few illnesses over a few months, and we have now got to the point where they will only fall asleep being held. Daytime nap is a bottle, fall sleep on me then moved to cot. Nighttime is bedtime story, bottle, fall sleep on me then transfer up to cot for the night.

So... how do I get them to self settle in the cot for naps and nighttime sleep? If I put them down awake (even drowsy), they will stand up against the side of the cot and cry until I go in.

I don't want to leave them to cry so don't want to do the cry it out method (I can see why people do I just personally don't want to), so any other advice welcome please 😊.
