20mo not going to sleep until 9-11pm

My 20 month old used to go to sleep around 8pm, he’s not a great sleeper by any means, but he’d usually wake about 7-8am, nap somewhere between 12-1 for 1-1.5 hours and he’d be asleep by 8-8:30, 9pm was classed as a very late night.

For about 2-3 weeks no matter what we do he will not sleep until 10pm or later. It’s almost 11pm now and he’s still awake.

He’s recently stopped breastfeeding to sleep (his choice), he feeds and then wants to be read to, but then just sits and wants to mess after we’ve read to him. We don’t mind this at all, but it’s just so late. We feed, read and then turn the light off and cuddle him but he just sits up moaning or talking and just not sleeping. We’re (me or his dad) lay in our bed with him next to us, his cot is next to our bed so once he’s asleep we put him in there. Once he’s asleep he will stay asleep for 3ish hours, but it just takes so long.

We’ve tried everything re waking up and naps, yesterday he woke at 7, napped 1:30-3 and then was still up till 10. At nursery he naps 12:30-2 and still doesn’t make a difference.

He didn’t nap at all last Friday and he did go to sleep before 9, but was so unsettled all night long which makes me think he’s not ready to drop the nap.

Has anyone got any ideas? We both work full time and we spend our whole days working and then putting him to bed as it takes so long.
