Baby barely sleeps at nursery

My 12 month DS started nursery a few weeks ago and has settled well BUT he hardly gets any sleep there. He goes three days a week, and he has a lunchtime nap there but this can be as little as 40 mins and max 1hr 20. He is there for 9 hours and is completely shattered by the time I pick him up, and then sleeps badly at night cos he’s overtired. On days when he’s at home he gets 2-3 hours’ sleep over 1 or 2 naps.

I’ve asked nursery to try and make sure he gets more sleep but I guess there’s only so much they can do to try and enable this. Or should I be more forceful about it?

I am just worried about how tired he is getting. Should I just accept it, or is there anything I could ask of nursery to try and address it?

Personally I’d give it a bit longer before you worry, I think it’s quite common for them to not sleep much at nursery. My 10month old started about 6 weeks ago and he’s normally a 3 hours of napping a day kinda guy at home, but at nursery he normally only does an hour and a bit all day. Plus one day where they said they could only get one 30 minute nap out of him all day eeek. I was chatting to the nursery manager about it and she said her daughters the same (and that’s with her mom working at the nursery she attends!) and it’s super common. Probably too much fun stuff going on for sleep!
Luckily my boy isn’t too effected by it in the evenings, we normally do quick snack dinner as soon as he’s home and then in bed early.
I’d give him a bit longer to get used to it and just try and do an earlier bedtime on his nursery days

My eldest never slept at nursery. She went from 10 months old. It was pure hell. She was an overtired mess when she got home and weekends were spent her catching up. Think even though they created a nice calm environment she knew stuff was going on and didn't want to miss out 🤣 even as a toddler when she was there she wouldn't nap.

Thanks both! I will just persevere and hope his naps get longer! He goes to nursery every other day so at least he can catch up on naps on the days in between

Took my little one about 6 weeks to nap even 10 minutes in a cot at nursery!

OP we're in the same position. My DD started about six weeks ago and the most she's done is 1hr10. Most days it's more like 40 mins. She also catches up on her days off, and she does enjoy nursery but she's always exhausted when I pick her up. I'm starting to wonder if she will sleep there or whether I should accept it. The only thing I wondered is if it might get better once she's really old enough for one long nap? At the moment she tends to need two still so we do that at home, and maybe the inconsistency is an issue.

Same boat here! 10 month old just started nursery and in the 4 sessions she's gone to she's only managed a 20 minute nap once. At home she has 2 a day usually totalling 2-3 hours.

I'm hoping as she gets more settled she will start sleeping there!!

My now 1 year old has been going to a childminder since September and only slept 30-50 minutes the whole day at the start. Now he sleeps anything from 1.5-3 hours. She can even get him to sleep in a pram which he hasnt fine for me since early Summer! I think it takes a bit of time, for both baby and their carer to find what works for them

babies and toddlers have fear on missing out at nursery! If my son sleeps for more than an hour there it's amazing
