4am wake ups help??

My 16month old ds has always been a great sleeper during nap times and night sleep. Hes currently on 2 naps. For the past week he has been waking at 4am and wont resettled cries until hes taken out of cot and brought down.

I tried to transition to 1 nap a few weeks back and he had multiple night waking so took it back to 2 naps and he was sleeping through again.

This week however nothing has changed but 4am starts. He is exhausted come 8.30am and literally falls asleep at this point.

Any help/suggestions welcome.

Have you considered other causes of waking? Like hunger or being cold? But if he’s able to go from 4am all the way to 8.30/9am, which is as much as 5 hours, without a nap I reckon he probably is ready to go down to one nap and he might just be tapping out his max sleep needs at that time. 16 months is a typical age to transition to 1 nap- when my eldest was that age the daycare didn’t let them nap in the morning beyond 15 months old and they were all fine.

Hi lakeshored thank you for your message. Yeah I've made sure hes warm enough and he eats plenty in the day 3 big meals 2 snacks. I will try transition to 1 nap again this week and see how he goes

My only concern about 1 nap is how I get him from a 4am wake up to a mid day nap as it's a long wake window

I know it’s slightly different but we did a lot of travelling when my eldest was an older baby/young toddler and when she’d be on U.K. time and we got back to the US, she’d initially wake really early, then we’d do a morning nap at 9am again but cap at 45 mins, then adjust over a few days until it merged with the after lunch nap. It always got her back on a normal schedule within a week.
