Naps after a bad night

Hi!

Wondering if someone can help me.

I know day sleep affects night sleep and my 13 month old should only be having around 2 hours of naps per day. However, if he's had a particularly bad night, like last night (and the last few nights actually!) where he has been awake since 4am or before sometimes, I cannot expect him to wait till 9ish for a nap as I would on a day if he awoke at 6.30am.

Today for instance, he woke up at 3.45am and would not go back to sleep. He then went for a nap at 7am. He slept for just over 2 hours. I know this was probably too long however we also had some much needed sleep. Then this afternoon he's falling asleep again around 2pm.

I'm planning on waking him at 3pm and then bed as normal at 7pm.

I never know whether to let him sleep more to try and catch up with sleep or still curb his sleep to keep in with some sort of routine?

The bottom line is his sleep has been all over the place for about 2 weeks now. Today he has napped loads but other days he doesn't and still wakes early.

Help !!!

I always stick to routine, even if it's less than fun. Otherwise as you've found, it might ask get further and further from routine.

When they're tired, if you can keep them awake with quiet activities like bath, books etc until time to sleep.
