Putting toddler down

I’m looking for some practical tips if possible please…

DS (18 months) has never been a great sleeper and a few months ago we started co-sleeping as I was just exhausted. I’m now trying to gradually get him back into his cot as I’m finding that I don’t sleep particularly well when he is in bed with me, and I’m getting back ache from not moving around freely.

He cuddles / feeds to sleep. I can then put home in the cot at bedtime, usually without any difficulty. The problem arises when he wakes for a night feed; he will feed / cuddle to sleep but then wakes every time I try to lower him into the cot, and the whole process starts again.

He doesn’t settle if I leave him in the cot, just stands up, screams and rattles the bars. I can’t really leave this to go on for long as he will wake DD and the neighbours. Patting, shushing and leaning over the bars for a cuddle don’t seem to work as he is just so cross about being put down.

I can put him down onto a level surface fine, it seems to be the lowering him into the cot that is the problem.

Any ideas?
