2yr old waking in night - advice/cause?

I would welcome any thoughts on this. My 2yr old DD has always been a fairly good night sleeper. Obviously some nights she would wake and we would either leave her to settle or go in and calm her. She now seems to have a pattern of behaviour and i am not sure of the cause or the best approach.

Every night (pretty much )for the last 4-5 months she has woken up and cries or shouts quite loudly until we go in. She isnt looking for attention and immediately settles and goes back to sleep (we have never stayed with her to put her to sleep anyway as it has the opposite effect). Recently she asks for one of her 3 bed toys (which are already in the cot with her) - i pass it to her and she resettles and i leave.

Basically i am not sure if i am making things worse by responding to her each night - when she was much smaller we used controlled crying (with frequent visits) and it worked well. Now i get the impression she will scream until i go in.

Is a nightlight beneficial at this age? Though she makes no mention of the dark and actually finds it v hard to go to sleep when her room is too light.

Is this basically a stage that will pass?

thanks everyone for any thoughts...
alice

She might be a at that stage where she is just discovering all over again that she is on her own in the middle of the night and is a tad fussed - what happens if you leave her and do not go into her room at all?
