3 crazy hours

My baby is 5 weeks old and was following fairly normal newborn sleep patterns but lately we are having 2 or 3 crazy hours in the middle of the night where nothing will settle her and its driving me crazy. She'll have a 3 or 4 hour stretch initially then after a 12am/1am feed it all goes wrong. She is tired and will keep falling asleep but just constantly wake and her entire body just won't stop moving, arms flailing, legs moving all over the place, a lot of grunting and eventually escalates to crying.i pick her up, settle her (she doesn't want to feed during that time) and the whole thing starts again.

Then suddenly around 3am she'll conk out for another 3 or 4 hour stretch and be so peaceful, not moving at all or making a sound, I often have to check she's still breathing!

I thought it was reflux so keep her upright for ages after her feed but it doesn't help and she doesn't struggle at any other time.

Any ideas what's going on? The split nights are tiring and after 3 crazy hours of settling/changing/ trying 3 million things I'm wide awake and struggling to sleep when she does in the early hours. Plus my toddler then wakes anytime from 5am.

3.20 am now and the magical conking out hasn't happened yet and I am ready to cry!

The tried and tested way to deal with this is swaddle and dummy.

Are you using a swaddle?

It doesn't need to be anything special, just a cut up sheet or giant muslin square. Nice and tight.

Are you using a dummy?

The comfort sucking helps baby to sleep independently (ie away from you, in the cot). It takes a bit if learning and practice to use a dummy for comfort, but we'll worth it for no crying independant sleep.

Dummy and swaddle saved my sanity at that age!

Are you winding her properly after her feed? Could be wind related.
