3yo refuses a duvet!

My son is 3y9m. He has always been a 'hot' baby but now he is refusing his duvet all together and would rather sleep under a tiny thin blanket! I can't understand how he is warm enough. We dress him in long PJ's and bed socks but he is waking 3x a night asking us to put his blanket back on (even tho we have showed him how to do it himself repeatedly) or more recently random things like he wants a tissue or wants something taken out his room because its scaring him. When you go in he is rolled into a ball. I think he is waking up because he is cold.

If we stick to our guns and say he HAS to have the duvet he will simply scrunch it down to the bottom of his bed and sleep without it all night (but keep waking up!)

I'm not sure what to do for the best. What do others do with a fussy duvet refuser?

What if he got to choose his own special duvet cover? Or failing that thicker, larger blanket with favourite character?
I had a ‘hot’ baby too and even now she will still sleep on top of the duvet and pull a blanket over her. She will get under if she gets cold, but she’s 5 now!

Or wait til he’s asleep, go in and cover him upGrin

Mumdiva99 · 12/10/2021 19:35

Can you put the duvet on him when he's asleep?

BadgertheBodger · 12/10/2021 19:37

Weighted blanket? Sleeping bag? Or, as I did with my 15 month old when he worked out how to get out of baby sleeping bags, just double layer him in PJs and a fleece onesie.

He is a really light sleeper, as soon as we open his door he wakes up!

I think maybe @Suzi888 your suggestion of character bedding/blanket would work. I just don't want gross avengers bedding just yet Grin but maybe needs must!

I think if we layered him up he might struggle to get out of bed and use his potty, sometimes now he gets in a bit of a muddle.

We got Merino wool pyjamas for our duvet refusers. Expensive but stopped them waking up cold.

🤣 Mixture of Unicorn plus Frozen bedding here. Anything for an undisturbed night of sleep!

Merino wool PJs sound like heaven.....my kids get the fleece PJs from Primark. Lovely and warm and cheaper.
Yes yes yes to character bedding. Let him choose a new duvet cover. Needs must.....

Bananapancakes6 · 13/10/2021 09:49

He has chosen a huge incredible hulk polar fleece blanket Blush it better bloody work! Grin

Sounds wonderful. I hope he loves it. You can have colour co-ordinated again in 15 years time......

Reading with interest. DD 22m is a stripper LOL we put her in PJs, she gets herself undressed during the night 🤦 we're lucky if she doesn't take off her nappy 😬 she gets herself out if sleeping bags somehow.... onesies on backwards doesn't work, she escapes. Can't do long sleeve vest as she pulls her arms out and it kind if rides down her torso, then she can take it off....and remove nappy.

Currently she goes to bed in nappy and short sleeve vest over.

Wakes up around 3/4am cold...
