Ditching the dummy - all the way?

Hi, my 3 and a half month old is good at going to bed at 7pm but he usually needs his dummy. he also uses it to go down for his naps. I'm reading the Little Ones baby sleep program and thinking of giving it a go.

I think it's a good idea to try to ditch the dummy (as they suggest) so that he can properly self-soothe himself to sleep. My question is then: does he have to give up the dummy completely? Eg when on a crowded bus and getting fractious? I'm thinking yes, since it's all rather confusing for him otherwise?

Perhaps he will use his choses self-soothing method at those times? Thumb/fingers/comforter/cuddly?

Anyone have any experience/tips?

Thank you
