Getting back to self soothing?

My LO is 9 months and for the past 3ish was doing great at putting himself to sleep. We'd put him in the cot with his Ewan the dream sheep and go downstairs and in 10/15 mins or so he'd be asleep. This was for both daytime naps and nighttime sleep.

However he was ill last week and wouldn't go In the cot unless asleep so we cuddled him/fed him to sleep then transferred. Had a few interrupted nights due to his illness, but he's back to sleeping through now.

But now he's better he will not go down himself to sleep in the day or at nighttime - only being held or fed.

Any tips on how to get him back on track please? Not using the cry it out method

I would put him in the cot awake, as you did, but bend diwn into the cot and stay comforting him in there to calm him down.
