Horrific night terrors ?!

Our daughter (3 next week) started having night terrors again last week (previously they would just involve screaming/crying albeit still not pleasant) however this time they are traumatising for all as she is awake for 2 hours plus walking, thrashing, screaming, hitting, trying to bite and kicking if we even try to gently reassure her. The doctor's think it could be where she has tonsillitis at the moment but we just feel sleep deprived and hoping this isn't a pattern our daughter is now stuck in. We thought her antibiotics were kicking in as she slept Saturday night well but maybe she was just really tired from the night before. I got home last night, my husband said she had been thrashing, kicking and hitting again. Has anyone else experienced these types of nighttime terrors? And was is caused by an event i.e. tonsillitis and please reassure they grow out of it. Feeling really tired and low and like I have failed as a mum because my daughter is behaving this way (she is then grumpy the next morning) Day 3 of antibiotics (albeit hiding them in smoothies) hoping they are starting to help her!!
