2 and a half - nap time a problem?

Hi all

Our 2 and a half year old is generally a good sleeper but he’s starting to take some time to fall asleep.

I’m not sure whether it’s because of an increasingly active mind or because his nap times are too long.

He falls asleep for his nap quickly and sleeps for 90 mins to 2 hours quite reliably.

Does anyone have experience of when the right time to reduce the nap is and what the signs are that it’s the right time?

Taking a long time to get to sleep at bedtime is a sign the nap is ready to be dropped.

I would just do the odd day here and there. Say one day without a nap, then 4 days with a nap to catch up. Then another day without a nap and 3 days without a map. Then a few weeks of 3 or 4 naps per week, the other days without naps. And so on.

On the days without a nap, have quiet time on the sofa instead.

Sounds like he might be ready to go without a nap on some days. My DD is 2 yrs 9 months and has mostly dropped her nap now.

She used to sleep 2 hours reliably from 1-3 but suddenly bedtime encamp a nightmare. I was always really stressed about getting her to nap and then one day it didn’t happen...and she was fine!

She generally has quiet time on the sofa now (and does occasionally drop
off in the car) but bedtimes are 100% better.

Maybe try seeing if he can make it through the afternoon with no sleep and see how he gets on?
