10 month old - nap help!

You lot have really helped in the past so just trying to see if anyone has any advice they can offer me.

I had a lovely routine with my 10mo dd who sleeps through 7-6 overnight. She was having 30-60 mins nap at 9am and then 1.5-2 hours nap (12.30ish).

However, recently her lunch nap is getting shorter and shorter and for the last two days she's only had 30 mins.

She's exhausted on this little sleep so I know she needs more but she will not resettle so 🤷‍♀️ what can I do?!

How long has she had on a morning the last two days?
Could she survive without the morning nap and just go to one at dinner?

thaimoon · 05/07/2021 18:58

Thanks for your reply. She's had 30 mins. She could go on and on in the morning so I wake her. She's desperate for sleep by about 9, rubbing eyes and getting cranky so I'm not sure she would make it until lunch time but it's worth a shot... you reckon maybe she's just not tired at lunch then?

Why not try letting her have her long sleep on a morning, cap at 2 hours, power nap of 30 mins mid afternoon.

One of my friends DD had her longest sleep on a morning and did until she was just over 2.

Agree with pp. Let her have what she needs in the morning. Then she'll wake later and can have afternoon nap later. Then if it's short it will be closer to bedtime anyway. She may be getting overtired from needing longer in the morning and being woken.

FATEdestiny · 05/07/2021 20:54

Your awake window between the two naps is short. Aim for 3h here. The approximation for awake windows is

  • 2h awake from waking to nap 1
  • 3h awake between nap 1 and nap 2
  • 4h awake from nap 2 to bedtime

I also agree with PP about not limiting morning nap.

Thank you all for your advice. I'm worried if I just let her sleep on in the morning she wouldn't sleep at all in the afternoon and would then be overtired for bedtime.

But, I do need to try something as another day of very little sleep today.

My 1 year old usually has 2 hours in the morning and 30 mins in the afternoon... Good luck if you give it a go 🤞🏻

Same. Always had the longest nap in the morning x

It was her first molar guys!! It's just peeped through now and finally sleep is back on track.

I thought she would been too young for it but that's what it was. Thanks again though, your advice was still useful as I'm sure she'll be approaching nap transition soon

A longer morning nap is usually better at this age. If you're waking her after 30 minutes then she's not even having a full sleep cycle
