How long does your 2 year old nap

Does your 2 year old have a nap through the day?

If so,

How long for?
What time?
Where?

I would expect a just turned 2yo to having a lunchtime nap still. 11-12h overnight plus 1.5-3h day time nap.

At nearly 3yo you might be down to 1-1.5h nap and starting to have occassional days without a nap. 12h average at night.

TheMotherlode · 28/06/2021 20:30

My just turned 2 year old has around 1 hour to 1.5 hours most days. She goes down at 12:30-1pm.

TheMotherlode · 28/06/2021 20:32

Oh, and she naps in her cot at home and on a floor mat at nursery. She’ll nap in the car if necessary but I try to avoid that.

RogueV · 28/06/2021 20:33

2.5 year old around an hour in her cot
Some days she has started to go without and sometimes at nursery she doesn’t sleep

MadeForThis · 28/06/2021 20:34

Both my DD's dropped their naps totally around 2. Still slept sometimes in the car.

Ohshittt · 28/06/2021 20:36

2.5 year old here, sleeps in his bed for around 1.5 hours, sometimes in the car if we are out. Any longer than that and it would affect his evening sleep! He goes 7pm-6.30am overnight.

Maryann1975 · 28/06/2021 20:44

A just turned 2 year old? I’d say around 1.5 -2 hours every day. A nearly 3 year old, an hour, every other day. Depends so much on the child. Those timings are what my middle sleeping child did. Worst sleeper had dropped their nap by two. Best sleeper was still napping At weekends when she was 5.5. (School was a tiring shock to her!)

dopeyduck · 28/06/2021 20:57

Agree this varies so much. My 19 month old is 1.5hrs (on a good day) 11-12:30 ish.

My 2.5y/o niece regularly has 2.5hr in the middle of the day / early afternoon and maybe a 20 min cat nap in the morning if she's in car for school run etc.

Neither sleep through the night yet.

DS has always been a 'bad sleeper' and he simply just doesn't need as much sleep as others / me!

dopeyduck · 28/06/2021 20:57

Oh and yes he sleeps in his bed.

welshweasel · 28/06/2021 21:00

2.5 year old was napping 1-2 hours at 1230. In cot at home or on mat at nursery. We’ve just dropped the nap as bedtime was becoming very protracted and he was waking early. Now back to 7-7 night sleep.

IWantT0BreakFree · 28/06/2021 21:02

DD stopped napping the week she turned 2. Horrific. Although she was always a rubbish napper and only ever did little 15-45 minute snoozes as a baby. Certainly none of the glorious 3 hour rests that my friends enjoyed with their kids.

noscoobydoodle · 28/06/2021 21:04

DC1 still had 2 hr nap around lunchtime at 2 (and 3 and 4!) In the cot, pushchair, car, mat at nursery. DC2 had dropped all naps way before 2. DC3 is 17 months and has an hour nap around lunchtime- pushchair, car, bed (he is Houdini and climbed out of the cot and travel cot!) or mat at nursery.

LapinR0se · 28/06/2021 21:07

I think there’s a massive difference between a child who is 25 months and one who is 35 months in terms of sleep needs.
When they are just 2 years old, they still need a lovely long sleep in the day. But by 3 in can play havoc with their bedtime.
How old is your toddler OP?

Juancornetto · 28/06/2021 21:08

Both mine stopped napping soon after turning two

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 28/06/2021 21:09

Dd is 2.5 and hasn’t napped for a couple of months as she was being a complete pain at bedtime/waking several times a night. Stopped the nap and it got much better. She will still drop off in the car in the afternoons but I try to not let her have more than 1/2 hour.

Naps were after lunch 12:30-1 for a hour sometimes a bit longer in cot.

Ds dropped his nap at about 2.5 and then started again 4 days a week when he went to nursery (the other 3 days) aged 2.10 for a few months.

BendingSpoons · 28/06/2021 21:11

DS is 28m. He naps for about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is now generally closer to 1.5 hours, whereas a month or two ago we were often waking after 2 hours to do school pick up.

MeadowHay · 29/06/2021 09:05

Mine had one nap a day from being about 18 months, after lunch. At just 2 this was at about 1pm and she would usually sleep for approx. 2hrs. She's just turned 3 and she now naps for about 30-45 mins usually about 2 or 3pm but can vary depending on what we are doing as we no longer feel beholden to the house for nap time as she can cat nap on the go or have no nap and still cope til bed time now. She hasn't napped at nursery for about 6 months.

mynameiscalypso · 29/06/2021 09:07

2 next month here. Generally sleeps from 7.30 - 6.30 at night and then for two hours (12 - 2) at lunch. Sometimes Will want to sleep for longer than 2 hours but we tend to wake him up otherwise bedtime becomes a nightmare.

jamsandwich1 · 29/06/2021 15:07

My DS is 2.5yo. He dropped down to one nap at 26 months! He now naps 12.30-3pm and then bed at 7 and up at 6am

moonlight1705 · 29/06/2021 16:23

DD is 2.5 and dropped her nap when she was 22 months completely: she now just sleeps 7pm - 6.30am and that is it.

havingnumbertwo · 30/06/2021 20:53

Thank you for all your replies!
My LO is 26 months, sleeps for 3 hours every day 1:30-4:30 then bed 7:30/8pm till 7/8am.

I was interested to see what other people's children do at this stage as my MIL has made a few comments now about his nap being so long through the day but if he doesn't have that nap he struggles to settle down to sleep on a night and wakes up really early on a morning!

A few friends with children the same age and younger have also said they can't believe how much he sleeps compared to their child.

I'm almost 33 weeks pregnant so am really greatful for that 3 hour break everyday!!

If the nap isn’t disturbing his night sleep then just enjoy it!

That is a long nap and close to bedtime so it make sense that people have expressed surprise, but it doesn’t mean it’s wrong if it’s working for you all x

Santastealer · 01/07/2021 16:38

My 2.5 year old is just starting to adjust her nap and sleep less. But she has been doing 13 hours at night and 2-3 in the day! She loves her sleep.

Coolcoolcool · 02/07/2021 22:19

Ooh just enjoy it, and don’t listen to others! My just turned 3yo still naps 2-2.5 hours a day (would go longer but we wake him), and 12/11.5 hours at night. If he skips his nap he sleeps terribly at night. All of his other friends dropped their nap ages ago, but I feel very grateful he still loves his. Although unsure what to do when he starts school nursery in August and they don’t facilitate naps…

Mattieandmummy · 02/07/2021 22:53

Totally just enjoy it, I would love such a nap! My DD sleeps for anywhere between 30 mins to and hour and a half about lunchtime and some days not at all. I fear the naps are in the way out over here! 😭
