How to stop feeding to sleep

DS is 7 months and EBF. In the early days I was told to feed on demand, so I did. But here I am, several months later, still feeding to sleep every night and every time DS wakes in the night, which is currently every 2 hours. When he was younger I fed him back to sleep cos I presumed he was hungry, and he only used to wake 1/2 times a night. Now it's just a comfort thing, but I don't understand at what point I was supposed to stop feeding him in the night, and now don't know how to wean him off the boob! He won't be settled any other way, and we're currently co-sleeping so that I get a decent amount of sleep each night. How do I break the cycle??

The gentle way would be to unlatch him about 5 minutes before you normally would, then cuddle to sleep for the final bit. Start a new habit, say patting him while feeding him and continuing patting while cuddling. This is to develop a new sleep association. After a few weeks of this unlatch another 5 extra minutes earlier and pat/cuddle for the last bit of going to sleep. And so on, keep unlatching earlier and earlier and move towards patting him to sleep.
