11 week old - still wakes regularly! Is this normal?

Hi all! DS is 11 weeks today. Currently, his night time sleeping is one block of around 3.5 hours. He then wakes up for a feed and goes back down quickly. He then sleeps for 1.5 to 2 hours at a time until the morning, waking up for feeds and going back quickly each time. When it takes a while for him to go back to sleep or he starts fussing, I give him a dummy and shush him until he goes back to sleep.

Is that normal or should he be sleeping for longer periods between feeds? An issue we have is that his feeds are short and regular, so during the night feeds, he feeds for 3-5 minutes at a time (same as during the day). I breastfeed.

He naps well during day time. He’s usually up for around 1.5 hours at a time before he gets cranky and needs a nap, and his naps vary from 40 minutes to 2 hours.

Is there anything I should be doing to help him sleep longer through the night? I’ve just been powering through but surely by now it should start to get better!

@MsHedgehog Sounds pretty good for 11 weeks to me!! Woke every 1.5-2h during the night for a feed until about 14 weeks!!

Mine slept 5 hours solid last night for the first time ever - hes 7 months 🤣😬

ColdWaterTherapy · 09/06/2021 17:33

This sounds great! Mine woke every 45 minutes till he was six months old, and managed 1.5 hours at a time when he got to nearly one. At 5 and a half he has only slept through the night two nights (2). They really are all completely individual.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 09/06/2021 17:35

11 weeks!

You're doing well, in the nicest possible way the problem here is your expectations Smile

BunnyRuddington · 09/06/2021 17:35

Sounds completely normal to me too.

burritofan · 09/06/2021 17:37

Bless you. Mine woke minimum of 6 times a night til 18 months. Yours may do better!

The thing to be prepared for is their sleep changes CONSTANTLY. Four month regression... and six month and nine month and so on. Teething. Illness. Jabs. Development. Etc. You’ll get good nights and bad nights.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2021 17:37

Hahahahaha!

Perfectly normal. DS slept well until 11 weeks old.

Then it all went tits up and the first time he slept through was age 5!

Good luck. You may wish to adjust your expectations a little by the sound of it!

Hufflepuffsunite · 09/06/2021 17:39

Yep totally normal! It does improve (very slowly and with several regressions). My first finally slept through the night aged 2!

BunnyRuddington · 09/06/2021 17:39

Sounds like our DS was conspiring with yours @RedToothBrush. DN was apparently 7 Shock

FelicityPike · 09/06/2021 17:39

Waking regularly is still “normal” for A LOOOOONG time to come.
Good luck!

One of my nieces was 5.
MsHedgehog · 09/06/2021 17:40

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair Honestly, my expectations weren’t high - I thought it was normal and didn’t object! It was every 45 mins to an hour when he was new so to me it’s progress! But then I keep hearing others talk about their babies the same age sleeping through the night or at least 5 hours solid, and I thought maybe I’m doing something wrong!

Thanks everyone! Just reassuring that it’s ok!

These studies on normal infant sleep should help readjust your expectations @MsHedgehog, sorry Thanks

BunnyRuddington · 09/06/2021 17:41

Sorry here.

BunnyRuddington · 09/06/2021 17:44

But then I keep hearing others talk about their babies the same age sleeping through the night or at least 5 hours solid, and I thought maybe I’m doing something wrong! some babies do sleep through but a lot of parents also lie. I had the Ils constantly telling me how DN was sleeping through. Didn't find out fir years that she didn't sleep through for 7 years.

Have a read of this Smile

Flippyflops2021 · 09/06/2021 17:47

Once you get used to their ‘routine’ it’ll change!! Babies like to keep you on your toes. My third slept amazingly well until 6 months. Then it all went downhill. She’s 13 months now and back to waking once or twice a night which is do-able!

My 2 year old sometimes wakes more than this 😂

They are lying! Or making up excuses for why x, y or z night doesn't actually count!

Its called 'competitive parenting'. You will get used to it and grow to learn who is full of shit in time!

DS rarely sleeps through even now.

Coming in for a cuddle at 1 or 2am before trotting back to bed unaccompanied is pretty standard still here (DS is just shy of 7 now).

Tbh its nice at this point as one day he will stop and i will miss it forever.

DS is teen now and wouldn't dream of ever coming anywhere near us at night. You're right to enjoy it while it lasts Smile

@MsHedgehog Some babies are good sleepers from the start 🤷🏻‍♀️ And some mummy’s and daddy’s tell little fibs about how well their little darlings sleep/eat/play/develop 😉😉

You sound like you’re doing everything perfectly fine OP 🙂 Take advantage of what sleep you can get just now 😊 the 4 month sleep regression might not be far off and for us, that was an experience 😅
