Going from cot to bed

How old was your LO when you changed from cot to toddler bed?
How did you decide they were ready?
Did you have problems with them settling down to sleep?

My boy has just gone 2 and I'm wanting to put him into a toddler bed now as I'm due no2 in a couple of months and hoping to have him settled in a bed before he arrives.

Iv never felt he was ready to be changed into a bed as he moves around so much and has never had a problem going to bed in his cot, from 5 months old he has been in his own room been put into his cot awake and self settled to sleep no bother.

I'm worried that when I put him into a bed and leave the room he will just get up and this will unsettle his bedtime routine.

Would love some advice please

DD was/is the same with the moving around in the cot. I moved her into a big bed just before she turned 2 as I too needed it for her sibling. It was completely fine and I needn't have worried.

She is in a big bed with a guardrail that makes it like a giant cot, and I made it as much like her cot as possible to start with. So she didn't have a duvet, just a sheet on the bed and her sleeping bag. We kept the same bedtime routine, everything was the same other than the bed.

I also got her the same sheets as an older friend she idolises, so from the start she was extremely excited to sleep in the big girl bed. You could probably achieve the same by taking DS to choose his own from a shop.

Good luck! Hopefully it's just as smooth for you as it was for us.

I would buy a second cot and leave DC1 in his cot. I wouldn't consider moving to a bed until after 3rd birthday.

The age difference between mine is 2 years 2 months. We bought a next to me cot when the baby was born and older DC stayed in his cot. When baby was 3-4 months, we started putting older DC in big bed for afternoon naps. When the baby was 7 months, we moved the older one in the big bed with a bed guard, so he was about 2 and 9 months.
Also we didn't want the older DC to be able to get out of his cot, the baby was enough to deal with during the night!
