He will not sleep on his back !

My little one is now 14 weeks- he has never slept on his back...he just used to settle on his side ( we tried the swaddle and put o his ack -but he always cried so we gave up swaddle)...but he has in the last few weeks rolled onto his front - turning his head to the side and sleeping really well!

In fact now- unless he is really sleepy he wont go to sleep unless we put him on his front......which leaves me nervous as hell and usually go in to place him on his side after various minutes ( which often wakes up the poor lad)......

...so what should I do??

I'd let him sleep on his front. DS slept soooo much better on his front. If you're really worried you can buy special pillows that help them sleep on their side.

I've got no advice for you but wanted to say that DS was like this. Eventually I just had to give in and let him sleep on his front and it's been fine. He's now 7mo and seems to prefer going to sleep on his side but always ends up sleeping on his front. Apparently it's not a real worry once they can move positon themselves (though I have to confess to being worried about it when he was smaller).

Its up to you to make the decision really, we all know what the textbook answer is.

Saying that my boy did exactly what you describe. As a teeny baby as soon as you put him on his front he loved it and would be snoring away quite happily. Put him on his back and all hell would break loose!

I hated doing it, but loved to see him happy (and asleep!). I knew it wasn't the right advice to follow at the time but I did take the decision to let him carry on on his front.

He is now 7 and still loves sleeping on his front, must be more comforting for them.

(Have just re-read this and realise I sound really wishy-washy...sorry!).

my RLF's 12 week old DD sleeps only on her front too. Her midwife and HV as much as told her that it was fine although not in so many words. My DD also used to sleep on her front (and still does).

First baby huh? Does anyone in your house smoke or any other stuff associated with high risk of SIDS- I reckon probably not. Don't worry then ... Perfectly normal. My DS2 would go to sleep on his tummy from a young age and in the beginning I would go roll him over but after a bit I just decided that I was being paranoid. The education does go over the top as it caters for the 'lowest common denominator' in society.

Ds slept on his front all the time would not sleep any other way mil says DH only slept on his front aswell

ibroughtcake · 14/11/2007 20:59

DS 12 weeks slept on his front from day one. If we put him on his back he would flap around and look petrified.

If you don't smoke around him and the bedding is all correct etc then try not to worry too much

Thanks all
and yes AussieSim you guessed right- he is my first ....reassuring to know he is not the only one who does the tummy thing..I may try the pillow thing StrawberryMartini if I continue to worry my socks off!!

My first was exactly the same - slept brilliantly once i let her sleep on her tummy. I put dd2 straight on her tummy from birth ! as did my midwife friend (her idea in fact that i did it). there are lots of us out there - a very well kept secret! given away only by dd1 and the way she puts her dollies to sleep in their dolly cots!
