14mo resisting sleep and naps

Our little boy has always been a terrible napper but he has been amazing and getting himself to sleep for naps and bed time (normally taking about 10 minutes to settle for a nap and asleep for bed by 7pm or just after). The past few weeks he has been taking ages at nap times (30 minutes at least to get to sleep or not napping as resists it) and bedtime has been taking up to an hour. On the few days he has missed one of his two naps he has just had the one nap slightly earlier than normal. I started shortening the morning nap thinking perhaps he was trying to transition to one but that didn't make much difference. Yesterday he skipped the morning nap so Was asleep at 12pm ish (as wakes about 6am so I couldn't push it any later) and he only managed an hour and a half (we have rarely had the dream of the 2 hour + nap). So was awake at 1.40pm. Come bedtime obviously very overtired and hyperactive so we tried to put him down earlier than usual but then it took him until 8pm to settle down and go to sleep. Not really needing us just standing standing up in his cot moving around. Any suggestions on what's going on? Will it get better or do I now just have a tricky toddler on my hands?

What happens for him to go to sleep? He might just be in a phase where he needs a bit of extra help/support from you to go to sleep. Have you tried giving him extra help to drop off in any way?

Drop to one nap in middle of the day, bed time half 6 if he’s an early riser
Hour and half is fine for one nap.
Put some white noise on

@FATEdestiny and @Sunny1112 he gets himself to sleep by sucking his thumb. He isn't calling out for us just doesn't go to sleep for ages. He keeps waking at 5-5.30 even with just one nap at 12pm. He is happy in his cot until 6.30-7 just relaxing or chatting but he definitely need more sleep. Any tips for the early rising and taking forever to go to sleep? Tried the 6.30pm bedtime to compensate for lack of day sleep but still took him an hour to go to sleep
