19 month old cosleeping to independent sleeping

My ds has never been a good sleeper, but last month we had some hope as there was a few nights that he has slept until 3am. But the last couple of weeks he seems to be back to insisting that one of us (me or oh) join him in his bed and sleep with himaround 10pm (8pm bedtime). He sleeps in a bed with bed rails.

Does anyone have any tips on stopping cosleeping for a toddler this age? We tried sleep training before with no success so looking for some success stories.

Also willing to wait it out if it's possible that he'll go back to having longer stretches by himself. Has anyone any experience with a toddler adjusting themselves out of cosleeping? Part of me thinks he wants to start to get that independence but is held back because he needs us to fall back to sleep.

It's going to be exceptionally distressing to go from cosleep to independent sleep at this age.

The gentle way to tackle would be to embrace and accept Cosleeping until such a time that you can negotiate and explain better why it needs to stop. That's more in the aged 3-5 years realistically.
