7 month old baby always sleeps on belly now

Hi everyone,

I've always put my baby on his back to sleep to avoid SIDS, but in the last couple of weeks ( he's 7 months old now) he turns on his belly after a while. I try to turn him back on his back, but he then wakes up and gets angry. He seems to be sleeping quite well on his belly and wakes up less frequently than on his back.

It makes me worry a lot though and I have problems falling asleep as I'm so worried about SIDs.

Any advice? x

As soon as baby can successfully roll from back to front and back again, we left them in the position they put themselves in (mainly) both of mine were tummy sleepers from around 5-6 months and still at now at 3 & 5.

I'm sure I read that once baby can roll successfully that it isn't a danger to allow them to front sleep.

The attached screenshot from the lullaby trust is where I read this info.

My DS was a tummy sleeper as soon as he was able to roll over by himself. He's 3 next month and still sleeps on his tummy 90% of the time.

If he's rolling by himself then it's fine for him to sleep on his tummy

He'll be fine, mine was the same. I must say I've never been able to sleep flat on my back, I'm either on my side or front.

My DS was the same at this age. Once he can roll it's fine OP.

My son slept on his belly from about 6 months, as soon as he could independently roll back and forth from stomach to back I was comfortable with it and he's 18 months and still sleeps like this now, bum in the air!

My son is 4.5 months and has been sleeping on his tummy for the last 2 weeks. I spoke to our pediatrician and she said as long as I put him down to sleep on his back, it's OK if he decides to roll over onto his front.

I also invested in an Owlet sock which tracks heart rate and oxygen levels and will alert me if either of these dip below normal levels which gives me huge piece of mind.

He is able to roll both ways so I'm not too concerned about his new love of tummy sleeping!

Hey, this video got me me through this when I was having this problem with my son, maybe it helps you too!

Thanks, everyone for your reassurance.

It's good to know that he's safe and I guess I just have to accept his preference of belly sleeping.

My 2yo was like this as soon as he could roll. He has always been a much better sleeper than ds1 who slept on his back too and I've often wondered if the two things are linked!

Maternity nurse here - it's fine, if he's rolling himself over rather than being placed on his front.
