Waking at 3-help!??

Our little one is 17 months and he is still breastfed, he wakes usually only for 2 feeds a night and goes down easily normally but recently he's woke at 3 and as soon as he goes down in his cot he wakes and cries!?
We don't know why, I've tried to feed him again to resettle him, tried rocking him in the rocking chair, I ended up sleeping with him on a spare cot bed mattress last night-not very well mind you-but can anyone tell me why he's doing this or how we can stop it??? Thanks! X

He could be doing it for a multitude of reasons, the main one probably being that he's little. I wouldn't try to stress too much over why it's happening unless he looks like he's in pain or has a temperature.

If you want to try and stop it, have you thought of doing some night weaning? This method from Dr Jay Gordon is very gentle.
