Sleep regression or nap transition?

Hello!

My LOs sleep has never been great but it was getting better. Now it’s all gone to shit again and I’m not sure why!

He is just 7 months old and we have recently been transitioning him to 2 naps a day. We started doing this because on 3 naps he was waking up for an hour plus in the night, at least twice a night, and his bed time was getting later and later to cope with his extended wake windows. He was also fighting bed time (settled fine for naps).

Cut to now, currently trying 2 naps a day and he’s waking all night every 2 hours (a sleep cycle), seemingly overtired. We can’t do 234 cause he just can’t stay awake for 4 hours. We do 2.5 hours awake, nap, 3 hours awake, nap, and then 3.15 hours awake, bed. He naps for 1.5 hours normally. He’s going to bed early (6/6.30pm) to cope with the new schedule. But waking all night. What would you do? Switch him back to 3 naps and take the long wakenings at night? Or persevere with 2 naps and hope the new schedule settles (it’s been 2 weeks, no improvement).

OR, is this a sleep regression. He is pulling to stand ALL DAY LONG. And wakes up in the night to stand some more. The 4 month regression hit is early and was a killer, lasting 6 weeks plus. Should we just ride this out?
