FENNIGAN

Hi everyone,

My daughter is nearly 2 and we have had various problems with her sleep patterns. It has resulted in her sleeping in our bed since birth. I have attempted lots of times to get her in her own room. I am successful for a couple of hours but then she wakes up about 12 and screams constantly. I work full time and so its too easy to take her into bed with me just so I can get a decent nights sleep. Someone has suggested using Fennigan which is an allergic reaction drug or something. Apparantly its good for sending Kids to sleep for a good 6 hours. Has anyone ever heard of this?

yes it should n't be used in under2's and cause growth problems - don't do it

MissHoolie · 27/10/2004 13:57

ITs called phenergan - don't use it. ANyway that is not a longterm solution.

Yep but it's phenergann i think.

It is an antihistamine i think but we did use it for dd2 because of her horrendous sleep probs.
Basically she didn't sleep through until she was 14mths old. At 12mths old i was walking around like a zombie and said to the g.p that either she needed something or i did.
He then perscibed phenergan. I can't say that it worked to the extent that she slept through and we never had probs again cos it didn't. We were told to give it to her every other night at first for about a week, the idea being that it would get her into a rountine.
It did help with geting her to go to sleep but didn't stop her waking up again later in the night.
I also found that she was very dopey in the day if i had given in to her the night previous, and i was concerned it was slowing down her development as she was to dopey to do anything.

Also it doesn't alwasy work at all, some kids go hyper on it which you obviously don't need.

If i were in the same situation again i would still give it a go, but perhaps try sleep traning/controlled crying too.

No irt isn't a long term solution but to get them in to a rountine i stil say it is worth a try.

My dd had it from age 1 (perscribed by g.p) and she has never had any growth probs.

here you go - a previous thread about it
here

there are other threads abotu this too - just go to search archived messages and put in 'phenergan'

Perhaps i should explain too that by not sleeping through i mean that she would go to bed at 8pm and then wake up at 10pm and not sleep again until about 5 or 6am. Thats is why i was so desperate.

I suppose you just have to weigh up the pros and cons.
I was no longer able to function normally as i was so tired and had another child to see to also, which is why i used it for a wee while.

Have you tried other sleep training techniques ??

ds had sleep probs caused by eczema. He would scratch until he bled instead of going to sleep. My gp wanted to perscribe phenergan as it would have had the dual effect of reducing the itch and sending him to sleep; but when he saw it wasn't advised for the under 2's prescribed a different antihistamine instead (can't remember what now). After he was 2 ds did have phenergan very occasionally and no ill effects. It did help set a good sleep pattern if used 2 or 3 nights in a row.

sassybabee · 27/10/2004 17:38

all of mine have had it at one stage in their lives, not used on a long term situation thou. ds had a bad reaction to a dose( woke up in the night screaming uncontrallably...didnt even recognise me. thought i was gonna have to rush him to A&E!) luckily after an hour he calmed down!
you should really get your routine established and only use phenergan as the LAST RESORT, if at all!!
