6 week old extra sleepy! Is this normal?

Hi there,

Our baby boy is 6 weeks old today. Typically he will sleep for 2-3 hours and then be awake for 2-3 hours for feed/change of nappy etc.

As of today, he's extra sleepy, struggles to stay awake on the breast and will fall asleep within 20-30 minutes of being up.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal?

I'd love to hear from anyone with similar experiences!

Thanks
Wen

Around that age I had a couple of days where my son slept nearly all day and night. He would feed and then go straight back to sleep. I remember worrying that something was wrong, but in hindsight think maybe it was a growth spurt.

Ah thanks for the reassurance, much appreciated! We're first time parents so naturally worry about everything! Smile

Usually 6 weeks growth spurt. The eat more before it starts, then just feed and sleep during. As long as he is feeding and having wet nappies... However as I am not there and don't know your child I can't say if anything else is going on and if he appears unwell you could get him seen

Are you worried he is unwell?

2-3hrs of awake time is a lot! Perhaps baby is just tired. My 10w old lasts 1.5 hours awake before she's exhausted and needs a nap.

Thank you so much for your help and advice all. We'll keep monitoring and make sure he keeps feeding etc.

The day my DS had his first jabs, he slept all day. I woke him for feeds, but otherwise he was out cold. I think it's normal.
