What could this be?

Hi All. Hoping for some advice. My 5 month old is a terrible sleeper. Frequent night wakings with difficulty to resettle. Something she does is cry/whine when flat in the cot but when I pick her up over my shoulder it feels like she instantly falls asleep. When I put her back down she instantly wakes again. This on repeat! I thought it might be burps, or just enjoying snuggling into me....or any other advice as to what this may be. TIA lovelies x

I had same with my 5mo. It’s been since birth and only in the last couple of weeks that it’s improved. He now rolls straight onto his side and seems much more content. He can roll over both ways so I’m trying to just relax and leave him to it. I did wonder if it’s reflux that is uncomfortable when he lies flat but then he absolutely loves his pram and falls asleep on his back.

Sounds like the 4 month sleep regression when their sleep cycles mature and they start entering light sleep every 45 minutes and frequently wake. It normally improves by 6 months when you can start to sleep train if necessary. I found 4 to 6 months the hardest time.

@Betsyboo87 always good to hear someone had been thru the same and have come out the other side! I thought for a while it might be silent reflux too but like you said too she's fine when on her back at other times.

@weepingwillow22 Oh yes....could just be a regression, although there's never really been a progression!! What sleep training method did you use? X

At about 5.5 months I moved LO to his own room which really helped as we were not disturbing each other and then got my DH to settle him to sleep using shh patting rather than me feeding him. I continued to feed him once in the night, all other times my DH would settle him. It took a few nights for his sleep to improve. I found things got dramatically easier at 6 months so hang on in there. Four months was the hardest time and I remember it was just about survival and getting some sleep when I could.
