I need urgent advice..DS sleeping terribly

DS has slept from 5 months thru the night, however we went on holiday last week and during the holiday and since he has woke at 2am, we have reassurred him and he goes back off, then about 4am wakes up and wont go to sleep at all.
The only way we have managed to get him back off is to bring him into our bed, but i am worried about the consequences.

What can i do? if DH picks him up, he keeps screaming, but if i pick him up, he calms down (but doesnt go back to sleep)

i'm at my wits end and it caused a huge row las night between me and DH

HELP!

How old is he? have to do school run but will come back & have a look.

Is he hungry? teething?

he is 18 months. we have had a few random nights when he wakes, usually when he's teething or ill.

i just dont know where to turn and dont want to make a rod for my own back by bringing him into bed?

Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago when we took my dd away for a couple of days (she was about 14 months). She refused to sleep when we were away except when I slept (I use the term loosely!) with her. Of course we got back and my lo fought at bed time then was waking up about 1am and wouldn't go back to sleep till I was in with her.
We tried going in to sit with her for a few nights and when this ended up turning into hours on end we resorted to controlled crying. One night of going in after 15 minutes, then 20, then 25, and she was back to her old self sleeping through (touch wood) and we've had no problems since. I'm a great believer in controlled crying since I think it puts you back in charge. I really struggled going in to sit for what might be 2 hours till she eventually got back to sleep, only to wake when I put her into her cot. I was getting really annoyed, but at least with CC you leave as soon as they stop crying then go back a set intervals. I felt much calmer doing it this way. It sounds harsh but it's always been the only think that works for my lo.

thanks dolly, we did CC when he was younger and went thru a stage of this. i guess its worth another go. i just hate leaving him when he's stood up screaming at the top of his voice 'MUMMMMEeeeeeeeeeee'

One thing dh and I have always avoided at all costs is bringing dd into our bed. I must sound like really uncaring but it's more that I didn't want to start something that my dd wouldn't understand had to be stopped IYSWIM?
She's never been in our bed for this reason, and if we go to her at night we'll generally sit in the rocking chair in her room in the dark to settle her. She never gets out of her room after bedtime at 7, if she doesn't settle we'll go to her and sit if she needs it, rather than getting her up and bringing her through. I don't want her to think its morning after all!!! I have to say when I slept with her on holiday for 3 nights neither of us got as good a sleep as we would normally, any time I moved she woke up, and vice versa!

i'm usually exactly the same as you, but i havent been able to see another option... but i think you've just helped me make up my mind. Tonight i'll be going to bed early and will get this sorted ASAP

Hi Dolly, Sorry had to log off the other day as DS was throwing a huge tantrum. The night after he woke at 5am (which wasnt too bad) but i went in, spent 5 mins with him, left and he went back to sleep until 6.45.
Saturday he woke at 6am - perfect.
This morning he woke at 5am but wouldnt go back off! But he's back at nursery today so i'm hoping that getting him back into a routine should do him some good.
