Newborn bedtime routine

My little boy is 5 weeks old. We don’t have a routine really, but he generally has a feed around 6/7pm and then sleeps next to me on the sofa for a few hours (I know it’s not great, but he screams if I put him in the Moses basket, and I’m a single parent, so it’s the only time I get without a baby attached to me, or to eat a meal, all day).
When should I be getting a routine of putting him into his crib after this feed? I understand that they shouldn’t be alone at this age, but if I put him in his crib at 7pm and sit with him in the bedroom from then I wouldn’t have time for tea or to tidy up from the day as it’s the only time he isn’t on me. Can I leave him upstairs at this age? Or is it ok to keep him downstairs? We go up by 10.

Keep him downstairs with you until you’re ready to go to bed. You’re right that they shouldn’t sleep alone until 6 months. Just ensure he is safe where he is sleeping and there’s no risk of you falling asleep on the sofa.
