Contact naps in day but sleeps through at night in cot

Hello,

My DS is 6 months old and has been sleeping though the night since 11 weeks (for 11-12 hours per night) but has difficulties with naps in the day.

He has always slept at night in a separate cot, but for some reason struggles to nap unless he is on me or my husband, since about 6 weeks old. I've tried putting him down sleepy, actually asleep, in the same room as us, in his room with the blackout blinds. Nothing seems to work and he usually gets in a state if I try to put him down. He will fall asleep in the pram or the car, so I know he is happy to fall asleep separately.

Two questions I have, does it actually matter if he naps on us if he sleeps well at night (or am I setting him up for bad habits)? Also, could trying to persist with sleep training in the day affect how well he sleeps at night?

Thanks Smile

I think is he's sleeping that well at night I'd leave well alone! My DD is 6 months next week contact naps but unfortunately is going through a phase of being up 3-4 times overnight.

Naps are a different beast altogether from night sleep so I'd leave well alone. DD wouldn't nap in a cot but slept in there at night. Occasionally, she would nap for 45 mins and then wake up bit most naps were out in the buggy. At 10mths (and this is a thing), she started napping in the cot during the day too. There was a thread recently about the nap change that can happen at 10 mths. You may find your nap issues miraculously resolve.

If my DD was sleeping that well at night I’d be over the moon! I wouldn’t change anything unless it’s a problem.

DD was the same. Around a year she got antsy at nap time and wouldn't sleep so I persevered more with her cot and she started napping for a couple of hours in it. Won't do him any harm for now so enjoy it if you can and don't worry about it.
