I personally wouldn't buy a toddler bed. The only reason I have one (waiting for my 2.5 year old to move into) is because it was a hand me down. There's no reason not to put them in a real bed (use a guard rail if you think they might fall). Some toddler beds are pretty cute though, so if you want to spend the money there's no reason not to.

I got DD a toddler bed when she was 18 months and we deliberately choose it over a single bed.

As she was so young I was worried about her falling out of a big bed, even with a guard.

But also, she has tons of toys, etc. in her room and at this age toys seem so big. So the toddler bed gives her bags more room than a single would, and we can evens till fit storage underneath thanks to IKEA stoarge boxes

Depends on your circumstances and your own child. Toddler best is best option for us and will last her for a while yet.
