11 year old sleep problems

Hello, looking for advice on what to do about my 11 year old needing constant bedside comfort. She says she is too scared to be alone at night and often takes hours to get to sleep, as she wants to be checked every 10mins even after we spend a lot of time trying to relax her with audiobooks/back rubs. When she does get to sleep, she often wakes up and immediately gets up to find us. There follows several attempts to get her to stay in bed and settle, then she eventually ends up in our bed when we run out of energy. We are tired and fed up and can't see an end to this cycle. In need of fresh ideas! For the last week we haven't had time in the eve to be off duty and then have had to share our bed. She is exhausted too and sick of this problem. Any thoughts?

Has she always been a poor sleeper? Is she anxious generally?

@GrannyBags yes she has a long history of needing bedside attention. We had settled into a reasonable routine at our best point where we did audio book together, then checked every 15 mins til asleep. With the upheavals of the last 6 months, this has gradually got worse and she has been scared by a succession of things (Michael Jackson, Jack the Ripper etc) and won't stay put, wanted checks every 5 mins. For the last 10days she literally won't stay there without us and keeps wanting to come in our bed. We dug our heels in last night and wouldn't let her in. Noone got any sleep til 4.30am.
