Newborn sleeps all the time

This may sound ridiculous but I’m worried my week old baby is sleeping too much.
He feeds fine and there are plenty of wet and dirty nappies throughout the day but he just seems to wake to feed then goes back to sleep.
When he is awake he is alert, reacts to noise and makes sounds but I just don’t know what is normal.
Do newborns really just sleep and feed for the first few weeks?

Yep Smile totally normal. Eat, sleep, change, that’s about it to start off with. They need a lot of sleep for all the growing and change going on

Totally normal!

Thank you,
I was almost embarrassed to ask as it sounds like such a stupid question but I feel clueless- I was all prepared for zero sleep, in fairness I’m not getting much as he doesn’t sleep longer than 2/3 hours before another feed but then he falls back to sleep, but I just worry.
He does occasionally stay awake for a period like 30/40 mins but that’s not the norm for every time he wakes

My second dc was like this she barely woke up and would feed straight back to sleep, she was so cute and snoozy and she'd sleep in my arms at home and sleep in the pram the whole time when we went out for walks and then still sleep all night it was so strangely easy those first weeks but good for recovery for me! I rang the midwife a week in to this magical sleepy newborn to ask if it was normal and she said you've got a lovely sleepy baby, enjoy, and don't tell all your friends or they'll be jealous Wink

Totally usual. DD1 did this for 2 weeks and then was awake for the next 3 years (maybe a slight exaggeration but only slight). DD2 was asleep all the time for around 8 weeks before she fully woke up, but she may have been pretending to be asleep so that DD1 (then aged two) didn’t try and “play” with her.

My newborn is 10 days old and is the same! I actually thought there was something wrong with him because my first baby was completely different and born very alert! Apparently if they're doing plenty of nappies and waking for feeds they're fine! I'm not expecting this to.last though... let's make the most of it :)
