30 min cycle

18 week old can only sleep 1 30 mins cycle in one go before waking and being really alert. This is if hes held or put down. I'm worried all this unbroken sleep will have an impact on him.

His bed time sleep isnt the best. Most recently been worse but not sure if due to the 4 month regression or his broken sleep causing this

Any help will be appreciated

I have this to my 17 week old will nap in morning, lunchtime and around tea time but only for 30 mins at a time I’m noticing more now we are at 4 month... he is also teething and seems hungrier than usual but at night He is sleeping fine (so far anyway) so not sure what to make of it?

Have you tried...

Swaddling
White noise
A dummy??

Also a really low-intervention settling method, like shhh-pat rather than feeding back to sleep?

Jellyonaplate20 · 29/06/2020 13:40

@ChloeBo85 yes he is teething too and seems hungrier. His sleep has always been like this since birth. It's so frustrating because I feel like he isnt well rested. Hes so happy and smiley in the day so perhaps he is. If I hold his he wakes up crying but in his moses basket he wakes up nicely.

Once he turns 6 months I will start to put him upstairs

Yes we has white noise for bed time and dummy for bedtime and nap times. X

Also I always read that if a baby sleeps more during the day then they sleep better at night. I dont know how true this is if your baby is only having 1.5hours sleep.

The exact same thing is happening with my 20 week old all of a sudden! His eyes just ping open at exactly 30 minutes and he won't resettle back to sleep no matter how long I try for. He's now gone back from 3 naps a day to 4 naps a day because of this. I even try my best to shorten his wake windows and it still makes no difference.

Really hoping it'll just pass eventually!

Absolutely true.

Don't necessarily worry too much about naps being only half an hour, instead reduce your awake time between naps in order to maximise the amount of sleep baby gets overall.

As a general approximation have an awake time window of double nap length, give or take 15 minutes. So if you're getting 30 minute naps, your awake time wants to be about an hour. Include in this awake time the amount of time it takes you to settle baby back to sleep. Consider that is you have 1h awake between one nap and the next and a feed takes 10 minutes and settling baby back to sleep takes 20 minutes, then you may only have 30 minutes of active floor time. Life really should be mostly focused around baby sleeping for the first 4-6 months of it's life.
