11 wk old catnap problem

Hi all. Wondering if anyone out there is in a similar situation. My DS James is 11 weeks old. He used to nap for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. But since a few weeks ago he only naps for no more than 45 minutes, sometimes as little as 20 minutes. He catnaps 5 or 6 times throughout the day. Sometimes he's grouchy when he wakes and I can tell he probably needs a longer nap. I have tried letting him re-settle by leaving him in his cot for 10 minutes or so but usually once he's awake he doesn't go back to sleep.

I think perhaps his catnapping is not giving him enough rest, because on most day he is really grumpy by early evening.

Does anyone know who I can get him to take longer naps?

Thanks.

Does he sleep better if being pushed in his pram? My dd would sleep the whole walk plus a further half hour or so in our back garden (well bundled up of course), so if I walked for an hour, she'd have a good rest.
Helped to shift some of the weight too!!

Hi Sassy. No James doesn't sleep any better when pushed in his pram. Even if I hold him in my arms he will only nap for a short time. I'm hoping this is only a temporary phase he's going through and that he will get back to napping for longer periods.

sorry my dd 19 wks has always been a catnapper she has never slept longer than 45 mins in the day. i found that as she got older she got less grouchy as she didnt need as much sleep.
i think i tried everything ie swings/walks/slings

my ds the same age and he used to sleep for 1 1/2 hrs at noon then 2 wks ago stopped that and now just cat naps, 30mins morn, 20mins before lunch maybe 20 after and then i go for a walk round 4 . this will change and they will go longer as they get older.
it actually suits me that he cat naps cause he sleeps really well come 7pm for the night.

how is your ds at night?

hermykne, my DS has always slept well at night, even when he was napping for longer periods.

I wouldn't mind his catnapping, but I can see that when he wakes from his short naps he is still tired and grumpy, and he does get overtired in the early evening before he finally settle for the night.

my ds did get grumpy too and i was afraid he;d go to sleep in the evening too early but my dd keeps him awake from 6-7pm with her hijinks.

i guess he will go longer soon, once he starts to interact more with you and others - smiling and reacting to mobiles etc. i hope!
