Daytime Naps

Hi

How much daytime sleep do your 12/13 month olds have and over how many naps?

I'm trying to work out where I'm going wrong! 😴😴😴

Around 2.5 hours over 2 naps is about right/average. But will differ from baby to baby so don't worry too much about what others are doing just do what works for you.

Two naps per day are ideal at that age. I'd say 4h in total.

Generally speaking awake time windows want to be around 2h/3h/4h. So you can work backwards from awake time. That's around 9h awake time, so assumes 15h asleep over 24h.

I'd estimate overnight sleep to be 11h average for the night, so 4h daytime sleep. But if you happen to get 12h overnight then 3h daytime sleep. If your baby has only 10h overnight then it's reasonable to assume 5h daytime sleep.

At that age, we were lucky to get 2 x 45 min naps. At about 13/14 months we've transitioned to one nap. Generally lasts about an hour and a half, but up to 2 hours! It's amazing.

Night sleep is another story. Always has been. Tonight we got up every hour and a half. Yay.

I have an app where I track her sleep. She averages about 12 hours a day including nap. She's just not a great sleeper... chances are, you aren't doing anything wrong.

She's currently almost 15 months.

@physicskate Oh my goodness, every hour and a half!!

Our problem is LO wakes at 5am every single morning without fail and I'm wondering if it's because I'm getting the naps mixed up? Anyway I'll try doing 2 naps of around 90 mins and see if that makes a difference.

It's so hard at this age as it could be teething etc it's so confusing!

Hi,

My daughter is 5 months old and is breastfed. At nighttime she now sleeps through the night which is great and she sleeps in her cot. In the day time it is impossible for me to get her to sleep in there and I just can’t work our what to do. She feeds to sleep and in the day she has to constantly be attached to my nipple. If I put her in the cot asleep she wakes up immediately and cries. I’m following appropriate awake times so she’s not over tired, I do mini version of night time routines and sleep cues. I’m starting to feel frustrated at having to have her sleep on me for all of her naps - will she ever grow out of this or is the only way the dreaded self settling sleep training?

Thank you

Lily

My 12 month old sleeps roughly 7pm-5am most nights, and naps twice a day for around 1 hour each. Recently she's been refusing her 2nd nap, making her over tired! I'm at my wits end. I've just sent my husband out on a drive with her in the hope she'll have her 2nd nap in the car. I don't know whether she's dropping to just 1 nap but if so, I need that nap to be a long one!!

NewMum293 · 16/06/2020 19:57

4-5h daytime sleep at a year old 🤨??

My daughter was averaging about 2.5 hours over two naps at that age, now down to one nap at 14 months (between 1hr30 and 2hr 20 depending whether she manages to link a third cycle).

She has slept through since about 11 months x

Hellothere19999 · 16/06/2020 20:09

@Chester72 hi! My kid is about 5 months too.... she doesn’t sleep through but with regards to daytime naps, I’ve just figured out that taking her to the bedroom and doing mini night time routine (as you say) but not bothering with the cot has worked a charm for us!!!! I just wrap her up and roll her onto the bed with pillows either side so she can’t roll off 😊 I check on her and have a shower in the next room. Before this I had to sit with her on me the whole time. Hope that helps xx

I think my DD had about 2.5 hrs of naps at that age. 1.5hrs late morning and then another 1hr late afternoon. Approx.
