Trying my one year old in his cot in his own room for the first time tonight.

I'm in bed and can hear him screaming. His dads in there with him on the bed settee.

I really want to go get him, he's screaming his head off. Is this what everyone does to get them to stay in their own bed / sleep through?

That might be usual if you've made the massive change from cosleeping and cuddling to sleep - to cot, different room and no cuddling to sleep- all in one go.

I moved mine to own room about the same age. But they'd been sleeping independently in a cot next to my bed before then. So the only change was the room. No fuss at all with the change, mostly because everything was the same- same routine, same cot, same way to go to sleep, same parent, same settling technique. Just different walls.

@itshorrible we have only just started putting our DD (14 month old) into a cot this week. She has always co slept. This is her 4th night, and she went down without fuss and has been sleeping all night in cot. The first night, she screamed for hours! But I sat on the floor with her and held her hand. She eventually calmed and fell asleep.
Could you try that? There’s a method called the gradual retreat/ disappearing chair. Which gives children more support to settle.

Sorry, saw that his dad is with home. Keep everything the same, and you should hopefully notice improvement over a few nights.

@BeHereNowx32 thank you - there was a definite improvement yesterday. He went down at 8, woke at midnight, only took about a minute to settle him and he was back asleep until 5.30am. Hoping for the same tonight.
