Toddler screaming when going to bed :(

So my 21 month toddler has started screaming when going to bed - we’re on the second night of this now

Prior to this he had just started to be ok to be left to settle himself to sleep. He’s absolutely fine still doing this for naps

On Monday night I think he might have had a nightmare soon after he’d fallen asleep. He took ages to resettle and had to have us stay with him. Last night DH stayed for a bit (after several stories) , then left for a few mins to pop to the toilet. In that time he’d cried so hard he made himself sick (he had a late dinner and 9oz milk so I’m not sure if that had something to do with it)

In the end DH managed to sit in his doorway until he fell asleep

He’s doing the same tonight. He’s screaming even when we’re in the room And trying to get out of his cot

I’m not sure what to do. He’s never been like this before and isn’t at nap time. I literally kiss him goodnight and he’s happy for me to leave

If this is completely out of character and new - it would suggest something is physically wrong with him.

Could he be ill? Lots of childhood illnesses are invisible and we probably doesn't have the vocabulary to say he has a sore throat, tummy cramps, ear ache or whatever. Check his temperature.

Also - around the 2nd birthday is prime age for cutting molars. These are the most painful teeth to cut and are often far, far worse than any teething you've had before.

I don’t think he’s ill as no temp and he’s not actually been anywhere to get anything

He’s not showing his normal teething signs and is sleeping ok - normally he’s awake constantly but this only going to sleep which is the opposite

I just wasn’t sure if it was linked to the episode on Monday, or separation anxiety or something

He’s got a 14 week old brother but has been fine with everything up until now
